Background
Angola is located in Sub Sahara Africa, stretching the south of the mouth of Congo. The Portuguese came to Cabinada and quickly began trading slaves and diamonds. They trafficked black skinned Africans to serve white masters in Africa. Because of this issue, a series of wars formed the country of Angola. The people of Angola were controlled by Portugal for over five hundred years. In 1975 Angola become independent after fourteen years of armed resistance to Portugal colonial rule. UNITA, FLNA, MPLA were the three major movements fighting the was, however due to political differences amongst the parties , a civil war broke out. The MPLA which seized power was supported by Cuba and the Soviet union and the UNITA which went to war was supported by South Africa and the USA.
Current Affairs
Even though many attempts at peace were made, peace did not prevail, however in 2002 the death of a UNITA leader, Jonas Savimbi, raised a prospect of peace. Angola became a democratic nation, but some groups still rebel against authority. Angola is plagued with rebel forces, illegally sold diamonds, and corrupted oil suppliers. Oil exports and foreign loans have spurred economic growth and have fueled a reconstruction boom.
